Background of the Study
Nigerian Pidgin, a vibrant creole language, has evolved under diverse influences, including globalization. Historically, NP emerged from colonial encounters and local adaptations; however, the contemporary era of globalization has accelerated phonological changes in the language (Adeleke, 2023). Exposure to global media, digital communication, and intercultural interactions has introduced new phonetic patterns and altered pronunciation norms among NP speakers. This evolution is evident in vowel shifts, consonantal variations, and the adoption of new intonational patterns that reflect both local creativity and external influence (Okafor, 2024). Researchers note that globalization not only diversifies NP but also standardizes certain features as it becomes a tool for broader communication. Despite these observations, systematic research linking globalization to specific phonological changes in NP is limited. This study aims to appraise how globalization has shaped the phonological landscape of NP, using historical records and contemporary data to chart these changes.
Statement of the Problem
While globalization is recognized as a driver of language change, its specific impact on the phonology of Nigerian Pidgin remains underexplored (Adeleke, 2023). Existing studies often provide anecdotal evidence without systematic phonetic analysis. The lack of detailed, comparative studies hampers understanding of how global media and intercultural contact have altered NP’s sound system (Okafor, 2024). This gap hinders efforts to develop effective language policies and digital communication tools tailored to NP speakers.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of globalization in shaping Nigerian Pidgin’s phonology, contributing to a deeper understanding of language change in a globalized world. The findings will inform linguists, educators, and policymakers, helping to develop tools and strategies that accommodate evolving phonological norms. Ultimately, the research supports the preservation of NP’s unique identity while adapting to modern communication demands.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the phonological impact of globalization on Nigerian Pidgin and does not address syntactic or lexical changes.
